Two Mac owners who had trouble with their computers was denied service and repairs because they’ve smoked near the computer.

Apparently, Applecare may void your warranty if there’s a trace of nicotine, tar or tobacco smoke in your Apple product. Of course, I could understand it if the computer was clogged up with brown goo, causing overheating and failing parts, but that’s not what we’re talking about here.

Applecare denied repairing due to “health risks of second hand smoke”, fearing their employees might get ill by touching a smoker’s computer. Next, you’ll have to desinfect your Mac to have someone look at it. Fingerprints? Forget it, we’re not touching that mess.

I’m a PC myself, and recently opened up my notebook and left it under the dryer overnight as I spilled beer into the keyboard (again). I wouldn’t dream of sending it for repairs, of course, the warranty was voided when I opened it up the first time, and pouring beer inside a computer is very much “damage caused by accident, abuse, misuse (…)”. But I didn’t for a minute consider that the repairmen might get drunk.
